The college generates a return on investment to its major stakeholder groups - students, taxpayers and donors, and creates a significant positive impact on the business community.
We started offering courses in 1954 in response to the community’s need for advanced educational opportunities.
Eighty-four students attended rented classrooms in Lincoln High School and the curriculum was developed with help from the University of Michigan and Michigan State and Wayne State universities.
By 1962, enrollment reached more than 3,000 and voters approved the forming of the Community College District of the County of Macomb and a one-mill property tax to support its operation.
Since then, the college has kept pace with the community’s growing needs, gaining national prominence for its comprehensiveness and innovation.
We’ve been honored to be a stop on the campaign trail of most every presidential candidate for nearly three decades. And a frequent launch site for state initiatives.
Fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, Macomb is governed by an elected Board of Trustees.
1962: Macomb County voters approve establishing the Community College District of Macomb County
1965: South Campus opens
1968: Center Campus opens
1971: Macomb begins law enforcement and police training
1975: Health and Physical Education Building opens at South Campus (renovated in 1999 and renamed to the Sports & Expo Center)
1982: Macomb Center for the Performing Arts opens
1991: University Center (UC) opens
1997: East Campus opens (now houses Public Service Institute)
2002: Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC℠) opens
2006: Lorenzo Cultural Center opens
2008: Macomb Multicultural International Initiatives (MMII) established
2009: MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (doctoral program) opens at the UC
2010: Macomb Early College debuts
2010: SAFE @ Macomb program launches
2010: Center for Advanced Automotive Technology (CAAT) established
2014: Society of Active Retirees (SOAR) established (rebranded to Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment (MORE) in 2021)
2014: Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) opens
2015: Reading and Writing Studios open
2018: Strategic Plan 2025 initiative launches
2019: Macomb receives National Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education Program Associate Level designation from the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security
