Students in Macomb Community College’s Media and Communications Arts program (MACA) put their skills to work in a logo competition for the 2026 Shorewood Kiwanis Harper Charity Cruise, which will take place on Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores on Aug. 26. It is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser, with all proceeds supporting children’s charities throughout the community.

Ana Chauvin, 23, of Clinton Township, who is studying collaborative media as well as design and layout at Macomb, created the winning design, which will appear on all official cruise merchandise, including the T-shirts sold at the event.

“I don’t really know much about cars, so I dove into researching classic muscle cars. I landed on the 1969 Chevy Camaro SS and built the design around that idea,” said Chauvin, who hopes to work in graphic design following graduation. “I wanted it to feel like a vintage Michigan garage, with tools, a street sign and details that reflect St. Clair Shores.”

The Shorewood Kiwanis has collaborated with Macomb for more than a decade, giving students the opportunity to build portfolios, practice client communication skills and produce designs that are part of a major community event.

Mike Deneweth, co-chair, Shorewood Kiwanis Harper Charity Cruise, said the partnership remains meaningful because of its impact.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and it helps us give back to the community in so many ways,” said Deneweth. “I have barely any artistic ability, so watching these students create something phenomenal is incredible. Judging is so hard because the designs are all so good. This year, Ana’s design just popped right away; people walked in and immediately knew.”

James O. Sawyer IV, president, Macomb Community College, echoed the significance of the partnership and the students’ achievements.

“What’s most important is giving students a real client to work with and the chance to meet those needs. You heard how much thought they put into their designs — there’s a real process behind it, and they do it exceptionally well.”

Second place went to Amy Huang, 25, of Clinton Township, who is studying design and layout, and hopes to pursue a career in graphic design after graduation.

“I had so much fun designing this. I chose the AMC Javelin because I’ve loved that car since I was a kid,” said Huang. “I remember seeing it in yellow, so I brought that bright, disco era pop into my design.”

Third place went to Nada Butros, 21, of Warren, who is also studying design and layout, and plans to work in graphic design.

“I wanted the design to reflect St. Clair Shores, so I used the skyline and city logo,” said Butros. “I had to research muscle cars to choose the right one, and I learned so much about the screen printing process and being creative within the limitations. It was such an exciting surprise to place in the top three.”

Deanna Sheehan, professor of collaborative media and design and layout, said seeing the students succeed beyond the classroom is especially meaningful.

“One of the most exciting parts is seeing students’ reactions when they realize their work is out in the real world,” said Sheehan. “Whether they place first or third, they’re genuinely proud that a community client chose their design.”

The top three designers received cash awards donated by Roy O’Brien Ford and matched by the Foren Family Foundation through the Macomb Community College Foundation. Chauvin received $2,000 award for her first-place design, Huang received $1,300 and Butros received $700.
