Macomb Community College offers four summer career academies for hands-on exploration of career options

Macomb Community College is offering four, hands-on career academies this summer to provide students the opportunity to explore career options in health, public service, architectural design, construction, dental science and culinary.

Camp Scrubs – June 19 – 22

A health career academy for those entering the seventh through 10th grade, Camp Scrubs will focus on hands-on activities in Macomb’s state-of-the-art laboratories and Simulation Learning Center. Students will explore health careers including nursing; respiratory, physical and occupational therapy; radiology; laboratory science; medical assisting; dental science and surgical technology.

Camp Scrubs will be held Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Macomb’s Center Campus in Clinton Township. Cost is $25 and includes a Camp Scrubs scrub top and lunch.

Public Service and Dental Academy – June 26 – 29

Two fields will be presented in one academy. The public service sessions will be held June 26 and 27 at the college’s East Campus in Clinton Township. The dental science sessions will be held June 28 and 29 at the college’s Dental Hygiene Clinic, which is adjacent to the college’s South Campus in Warren.

During the public service sessions, students will learn about the requirements for becoming a police officer and participate in skills training, including conducting a traffic stop, subject control, K-9 handling, and emergency response. They will also see a demonstration of the firearms range and participate in law enforcement-style agility tests. On Day two, participants will learn about the requirements for becoming a firefighter and will participate in skills training, including the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus and fire extinguisher training, and will see a live-fire demonstration.

During the dental science sessions, participants will learn about the field and the educational preparation required for becoming a dental assistant or dental hygienist. Students will participate in various experiments examining the tooth decay process.

This camp is open to students entering sixth through 10th grade. Cost is $95, and lunch is provided.

Architectural Design and Build Academy – July 17 – 20

Participants will learn about the latest techniques and technologies in architecture and construction, including civil engineering, sustainable technology and computer-aided design. Projects will include building a butterfly house, designing a small architectural floor plan, creating an electrical project, building a digital 3D model and creating a solar oven.

This camp is open to students entering the sixth through 10th grade and will be held at Macomb’s South Campus. Cost is $95, and lunch is provided.

Macomb Culinary Institute Academy – July 31 – August 3

Students will work alongside a professional chef and get a glimpse of a day in a commercial kitchen, with new culinary challenges introduced each day. Students will learn both hot food kitchen operations and receive pastry baking instruction.

This camp will be held in the teaching kitchen on Macomb’s Center Campus and is open to students entering sixth through 10th grade. Cost is $95, and lunch is provided.

The career academies are funded in part by sponsors First State Bank, Macomb Intermediate School District and Bosch. Camp Scrubs is funded by the Macomb Community College Foundation.
