The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) helps you receive college credit for what you already know, for a fraction of the cost of a college course. Developed by the College Board, CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program. Earn qualifying scores on any of the 33 introductory-level college subject examinations and accelerate your education. The 90-minute exams, which cost $87 each, are administered at 1,800 test centers, and 2,900 colleges and universities.

A quick primer on how you can earn college credits and achieve your goals using CLEP.

Important CLEP Candidate Information

Each CLEP Computer-Based Test (CBT) is approximately 90 minutes, with the exception of College Composition, which is 120 minutes.

Exams contain mainly multiple-choice questions. College Composition and a few other exams contain other types of questions and essays.

More than 2,900 institutions in the United States accept CLEP credit. It is imperative to obtain a copy of your college or university's CLEP Credit Granting Policy. Don't forget to also contact schools you are planning to transfer to in the future.

Individuals may attempt to retake the same CLEP examination again, but are required to wait three months between exams.

You are not penalized for guessing (points not deducted for wrong answers)! It is to your advantage to supply an answer for each question.

CLEP for Military Personnel

Eligible veterans can receive full reimbursement for CLEP exam and administration fees from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. For more information about CLEP and the benefits available to veterans, visit Military personnel must present military ID. Retesting will no longer be funded on a previously funded CLEP exam. However, service members may personally fund a retest after waiting six months.

Macomb Community College's CLEP Credit Granting Policy

Macomb Community College awards credit for successful scores on 32 CLEP exams. Please keep in mind that how much credit you will receive for each CLEP exam you take and the score you have to achieve to get that credit or exemption may vary at other colleges or universities. Each college, however, reserves the right to set its own credit granting policy which may differ from that of ACE. If you haven't already done so, contact your college as soon as possible to find out the score it requires to grant credit, the number of credit hours granted, and the course(s) that can be bypassed with a satisfactory score. When transferring, credits will be evaluated by the receiving institution.
