  • NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) award winners Delena Austin and Monique Beauchamp-Doll are among six total honorees.
  • Austin reflects on nearly 30 years of educating future healthcare professionals, while Beauchamp-Doll shares insights from nearly 20 years of teaching Marketing at Macomb.
Six Macomb faculty members recently received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) award. NISOD celebrates individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to their students and colleagues, enhancing the overall educational experience.

The honorees are Delena Austin, Monique Beauchamp-Doll, Elizabeth Bosilkovski, Erin Fortuna, Abbey Jacobsen and Shaun Sarcona.

In this three-part series, two of the six honorees Austin and Beauchamp-Doll, discuss what their time at Macomb means to them, how they feel about taking home the NISOD and more.

Delena Austin

Longtime faculty Delena Austin, who has worked at the college for around three decades, believes one reason she received the NISOD is her involvement in the development of a healthcare readiness course. However, the countless students she has guided throughout the years might have another reason.

“It also means that Macomb students are learning skills that helped them in their personal and professional lives. That is my real award,” Austin said.

Austin, a faculty member in the college’s Medical Assistant program, teaches Health Science Technology, Medical Terminology, Body Systems and Healthcare Readiness. She is also the practicum coordinator for the Medical Assistant program.

A former medical assistant at an urgent care center, Austin said her work as a lab assistant at Macomb prompted her to pursue a career in teaching.

“When the opportunity (to teach) tapped me on the shoulder, I was happy to turn around,” she said.

Austin said she tries to be approachable and connect with her students when possible. She said she wants to create an environment that is focused, nurturing and growth oriented.

“I think once this environment is created, it is easier to motivate students,” she said. “Or better yet, allow them to learn how to keep motivating themselves effectively.”

Although she has many memorable moments in her long career, one that stands out involves an angry student, she said.

“She would question and challenge me every time I attempted to mentor her or teach her clinical skills. She had a lot of difficulty outside of the classroom,” Austin said. “I finally asked her to meet with me and have a heart-to-heart conversation. It did not go well. But at graduation, she brought me a gift basket, apologized and thanked me for caring enough to continually challenge her.”

Austin, who holds degrees from Macomb, Wayne State University, Oakland University, and Grand Canyon University, enjoys spending time with her children, hiking with her dogs, boating, reading, traveling and attending concerts. She’s also a volunteer at a miniature horse rescue.

Monique Beauchamp-Doll

When marketing faculty and NISOD award recipient Monique Beauchamp-Doll thinks back on her nearly two decades at Macomb, she can’t help but think of a rubber duckie.

Beauchamp-Doll has worked at Macomb for 19 years and teaches Principles of Marketing, Digital Marketing, Advertising, Consumer Behavior and Marketing Strategies.

“In one of my classes, I give a rubber duckie to the student who performs best in the final simulation competition. It’s a silly way to honor students and make it memorable,” she said.

One semester, a quiet student won. He did not say much and didn’t seem to enjoy the attention. However, Beauchamp later discovered that the duck left a lasting impression.

“A few years later, I got an email from the student with a picture of the duckie on his bachelor’s degree from Walsh. It also had a heartfelt thank-you note. I was floored,” she said.

It is moments like this, along with Beauchamp-Doll’s approachable personality and adaptability, that have helped her become a favorite faculty member in the business department.

“Some students need flexibility. Some students need structure. Some students need competition,” Beauchamp-Doll said. “Overall, I guess I try to meet the students where they are and treat them like people.”

A former advertising executive, Beauchamp-Doll decided to pursue an MBA because she wanted the opportunity to teach. Shortly after she earned her master’s degree from Wayne State (she also holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Syracuse University), Beauchamp-Doll applied for a teaching position at Macomb.

“It was fate,” she said.

In her free time, Beauchamp-Doll enjoys travel, fine dining and wine, crafts and attending concerts. She lives on Lake St. Clair and is on the board of directors for the Jefferson Yacht Club.

She said she “enjoys the heck” out of her life.
