Why community colleges deserve a second look
Blog Highlights

  • Community colleges are worth considering when choosing a college path.
  • They offer quality, affordability and flexibility that fits a wide range of student needs.
A practical choice for modern students

Thinking of attending Macomb or another community college but not sure if it’s the right decision for you?

In the past, students were told that a four-year university is the “gold standard” of higher education. Today, due to high tuition costs and changing workforce demands, the narrative is shifting. Community colleges are no longer a backup plan, but, for some students, they are the smartest plan.

“I think that every person is different and since we do have a lot of choices, it’s important to think about your professional dream and know that can be achieved through community college,” said Heidi Schall, director of Admissions at Macomb.

The same quality

There are several misconceptions when it comes to community college. Often viewed as “less than” or a fallback option, some prospective students don’t even consider a community college when thinking about their future.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the academic quality isn’t the same as a university. This is not the case, Schall said.

“Very often the faculty that teach at four-year institutions also teach at community colleges as adjunct faculty,” she said. “So, students are getting the same curriculum and the same experienced instructor, but at the convenience of the community college.”

Transfer agreements like the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) ensure that coursework aligns directly with university standards, reinforcing that the education itself is equivalent. The MTA also provides a smooth transition for students interested in transferring to four-year universities to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

“The quality is the same, but the difference is at the community college, it’s a better value,” Schall said.

A much lower price tag

The rising cost of higher education presents a roadblock for many families. Community colleges offer a way to pursue a degree without the overwhelming financial burden that often comes with a university education.

The Community College Guarantee is a state-funded scholarship program that provides a tuition-free option for many high school students. Other tuition-free opportunities, including the Macomb Tuition Advantage and Michigan Reconnect, offer huge savings for students.

There are a number of other scholarship opportunities available as well, ensuring that Macomb students graduate or transfer with very little to no debt.

“You really cannot beat the value of a community college when you look at it from a financial perspective,” Schall said.

A direct path to the workforce

Another outdated assumption is that a bachelor’s degree is the only way to achieve career success. That isn’t true anymore, Schall said.

“In today’s world, a lot of positions don’t even require a four-year degree,” Schall said. “You can get a great job with an associate degree or a certificate, especially in the skilled trades or health care areas.”

A flexible experience

One of the biggest advantages of community college is flexibility, both in and outside of the classroom.

Many students must balance school with jobs, family responsibilities or financial obligations that make relocating or attending full time at a university difficult.

Community colleges are designed with these realities in mind, offering flexible schedules with evening, online and hybrid options.

Campus life still matters

Academics isn’t the only part of a student’s college experience. Some worry they’ll miss out on student life by opting for community college. That’s not the case for students attending Macomb. “As far as athletics and student life, we have all of that here,” Schall said.

Macomb students can get involved in a variety of clubs, organizations and campus events. Leadership opportunities are available through service-based programs, honor societies and more.

In addition, Macomb offers intercollegiate sports and intramural activities that promote teamwork and school pride.

See for yourself

Touring a campus, attending an event, or speaking directly with faculty and staff can change perceptions and open doors students didn’t know existed. “People are so often amazed by our campus and the many things that we have here,” Schall said. “We welcome them to come and talk to us and take a tour – see for yourself.”
