What if you could go to college without paying tuition? If you’re a recent high school graduate in Michigan, that’s not just wishful thinking, it’s real.

Thanks to a new state program called the Community College Guarantee, you can attend Macomb for free and save thousands while working toward your degree or transfer goals.

“The state is giving money to students to earn a degree – they should take advantage of it,” said Janette Schocke, assistant director of financial aid at Macomb.

How does the Community College Guarantee work?

The state-sponsored program covers the first two years of community college. Students can continue receiving the scholarship for up to three years, as long as they remain full-time students, maintain good academic standing, and continue living in Michigan.

Who qualifies for the Community College Guarantee?

To qualify, students must:

  • Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
  • Graduate from a Michigan high school or obtain a high school equivalency certificate (GED) in 2023 or later
  • Reside in Michigan (since July 1 of the previous year), and be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or approved refugee
  • Enroll full-time, taking at least 12 credits per semester
  • Attend Macomb within 15 months of high school graduation
Unlike previous scholarship programs, the Community College Guarantee has no income requirements. And those who qualify for a Pell Grant may receive an additional $1,000 to help cover books, fees and other college expenses.

How long does the Community College Guarantee last?

Students can continue receiving the scholarship for up to three years, as long as they remain full-time students, maintain good academic standing, and continue living in Michigan.

What programs are covered under Community College Guarantee?

Students can choose from one of Macomb’s more than 200 programs, including transfer, degree and certificate programs.

“Now is the best time for young adults to pursue their education because of the different pathways a student can take and still receive funding,” Schocke said.
