Ryan Bates
Ryan Bates, Macomb Alumni
When Ryan Bates first enrolled at Macomb in 2009, he wasn’t sure where the journey would lead. What he did know was that Macomb offered the support and the accessible education he needed to build a future on his own terms.

Sixteen years and more than 170 credits later, Ryan recently graduated with his fourth degree. He has earned an Associate of General Studies, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and a degree in Maintenance Technology.   Ryan’s journey proves that success doesn’t always follow a straight line.

From emergency medicine to heating and cooling entrepreneur

Ryan began his career as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), later transitioning into therapeutic care and working with individuals with high support needs, including those with cerebral palsy and autism.

Although he found those fields rewarding, he wasn’t fulfilled. His passion for hands-on technical work eventually led him back to Macomb.  This time, he decided to pursue Maintenance Technology and Climate Control Technology, fields that combine his love for welding with practical applications in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and refrigeration.

He plans to take the reins of his family’s business, Hand and Heart Mechanical LLC, and is exploring a certificate in entrepreneurship to equip himself with the skills to lead the company.

Graduation speech was a surprise and a tribute

Ryan shared his unique educational journey at the spring 2025 graduation ceremony, where he was selected to speak. His speech, which he kept as a surprise from his family and friends, was in tribute to his mom, who was recently diagnosed with multiple myeloma. She was touched by her son’s tribute, Ryan said.

“I wasn’t even planning to graduate this semester,” he said. “I was going to wait until I finished my final degree. But when my mom got sick, I decided to walk now so she could see me graduate. I figured, why not share my story too, so she could also see me speak.

In his rare moments of free time, Ryan enjoys lifting weights and learning guitar. He jokes that he looks forward to finally reading a book that isn’t a textbook. Though he doesn’t plan to earn a fifth degree, he said he hopes to stay connected to Macomb in some way.

“I genuinely believe in Macomb as an institution,” he said. “I’ve found mentorship and guidance here that went far beyond the syllabus.”
