Learn about earning college credit at no cost while still in high school

Macomb Community College is hosting an informational meeting on dual enrollment opportunities for area high school students and their families Wednesday, Dec. 13, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. on the college’s South Campus in Warren. Dual enrollment helps high school students earn a college degree more quickly by taking college classes while still in high school. The session will cover the details of dual enrollment, including how students may quality to earn college credit at no cost while still attending high school.

“Dual enrollment is a mission for me because of my experience,” said Michael Baysdell, director, K-12 Relations, Macomb Community College. “Having been one of the first dual enrollment students, I understand the value. I know what it did for my educational career and how fast it got me into the workforce. I want to create those same types of opportunities for kids throughout Macomb County.”

The State of Michigan allows students in grades nine through 12 to take up to 10 college courses during their high school years. There are many advantages to dual enrollment for those planning to earn a college degree, including bolstering a weaker-than-desired high school GPA and supporting college completion. Of the dual-enrolled students at Macomb Community College, 80% either continue at Macomb after high school graduation or transfer to a university.

“Back in 1996, I was lucky to be among the very first students my senior year to take part in dual enrollment,” said Baysdell. “I took five classes, a total of 19 credits. After high school graduation, I transferred to a four-year college, finished in three years and then earned my masters in one. So, at the age of 22, I was in a classroom already teaching with my master’s degree.”

The information session will be held on the college’s South Campus at 14500 E. 12 Mile Road, Warren in the John Lewis Student Community Center (K Building) Room 301. Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is encouraged, and attendees eligible to win college merchandise and a tablet.
