A robot and controls technician keeps robotic systems running. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this field is expected to grow with up to 1,400 openings per year through 2035.
What is a robot and controls technician?
A robot and controls technician is a skilled professional who programs, installs, maintains and troubleshoots the robotic and automated systems used in manufacturing and industrial operations.These technicians work with robots, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, motors and automated equipment that help companies improve efficiency, quality and productivity.
“There are opportunities in a variety of industries that use robotics, automation and advanced technology,” said Christopher Reilly, director of Engineering and Advanced Technology at Macomb. “This includes automotive, aerospace, medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, food and beverage production, warehousing and distribution, and many other manufacturing environments.”

As robotics and automation become common on the shop floor, demand will continue to increase for technicians with the following skills:
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving
- PLC programming
- Electrical and mechanical aptitude
- Safety awareness
- Teamwork and communication

What training is required to become a robot and controls technician?
While some may assume the field requires extensive training or a degree, Macomb’s fast-track certificate program prepares students in 14 to 16 weeks.
No previous academic or work experience is necessary. The program is open to students of all ages, from recent high school graduates to industry professionals.
“The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys technology, likes figuring out how things work and isn’t afraid to solve problems,” Reilly said. “You do not need to have a strong technical background to get started."
Instead, qualities such as willingness to learn, curiosity, punctuality and adaptability are often the best indicators of success.
“One of the benefits of a career in robotics and controls is the variety of paths it can lead to,” Reilly said. “Students may begin in a technician role and later advance into areas such as engineering support, supervision, project management or other leadership roles.”
