Growing field offers employment opportunities after short-term program

Macomb Community College is holding informational workshops at 6 p.m.  on Wednesday, Nov. 20, and Wednesday, Dec. 18, on the college’s South Campus in Warren for those interested in pursuing a career as a pharmacy technician in either retail or hospital settings. Classes for the pharmacy technician program begin in January 2020.

Attendance at the workshop is required for all who are interested in pursuing this program. Representatives from the college’s Continuing Education Center for Health Careers will discuss pharmacy technician program requirements, national certification requirements, state licensing and internship placement.

There is a growing demand for pharmacy technicians. The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget projects 11% growth in the number of job openings for pharmacy technicians in Michigan from 2016 to 2026, adding a projected 1,150 positions annually. The average annual salary is estimated at approximately $32,700 or $15.70 per hour.

Pharmacy technicians work in both retail (ambulatory) and hospital (institutional) settings. Beyond filling prescriptions, pharmacy technicians in a retail setting also process insurance claims for the patient, keep inventory records, file necessary paperwork and act as the customer service representative for the pharmacy. In a hospital, ambulatory care pharmacies, nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, technicians prepare sterile solutions and deliver medications to nurses and physicians. They also create compound medications, IV fluids and nutritional mixtures.

Macomb’s accredited, approximately six-month program includes classroom instruction and a 200-hour unpaid internship to prepare the student to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. Passing this exam is required to apply for a pharmacy technician license through the State of Michigan. After receiving the Macomb Certificate of Completion and state license, Macomb’s Career Services Department can assist students in their job search.

The workshops will be held in C Building, Room 123, on the college’s South Campus in Warren. (Campus Map). For more information and to register for the workshop, call 586.226.4807 or email healthcareers@macomb.edu.
