– Monday, November 19, 2018 10:00AM

Opportunity for 25 individuals to participate in seven-month online course at no cost

Macomb Community College is introducing the Google IT Support Professional Certificate program, which provides a pathway for those new to information technology (IT) to enter the field.  Developed by Google and hosted on Coursera, this interactive program can be completed quickly. The program is part of Grow with Google, a Google initiative to help create economic opportunities for all Americans.

The instructor-led course will begin January 2019. It features a mix of video lectures, quizzes and hands-on labs and widgets, introducing students to troubleshooting, customer service, networking, operating systems, system administration and security.  By committing eight to 10 hours per week, the program can be completed in seven months. No prior experience or degree is necessary.

“The Google IT Support Professional Certificate program is an opportunity to get a start in one of the fast-growing fields,” said David Corba, dean, Business and Information Technology, Macomb Community College. “The online course provides students with scheduling flexibility to pursue a new profession while working or taking care of other family obligations.”

This program is available at no cost to the first 25 students who enroll, supported by funding through JFF, a national workforce and education nonprofit.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the outlook for computer support specialists is bright, with an expected 11 percent job growth rate from 2016 to 2026, adding approximately 88,500 jobs over that time frame. Google estimates that there are approximately 150,000 open IT support roles in the United States currently.

On completing the program, students will have the ability to share their information directly with employers hiring for IT support jobs, including Bank of America, Walmart, Sprint and Sam’s Club.
