Registration open for Macomb Community College’s summer Career Academies

Popular program helps high school students explore careers

Each summer, Macomb Community College offers high school students the opportunity for hands-on exploration of potential careers in a fun environment through its summer Career Academies. This summer’s 10 academies, guided by experts, provide engaging, practical activities, allowing high school students the chance to experience for themselves what their chosen field has to offer and if it is a good match with their skills and interests.

“These academies are designed to give students a look at what a specific profession is really like before they commit to future education,” said Ed Stanton, director, Admissions & Outreach, Macomb Community College. “By the end of the week, we hope the students have not only had fun but also a better understanding of what’s available to them. Even if they decide a particular career is not a path they want to follow, they’ve still made a valuable decision that will help focus their future pursuits.”

The academies are popular, so early registration is encouraged. The minimum age to participate is 14, excluding the Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS Academy, which requires participants to be at least 16. This year’s Career Academies include:

  • Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS: June 18-22, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., East Campus, Free of charge (For those at least 16)
  • IT Gaming: June 18-21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Center Campus, Fee $110
  • Media & Communication Arts: June 18-21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., South Campus, Fee $110
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles: June 18-21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., South Campus, Fee $15
  • Computer Programming: June 18-22, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Center Campus, Fee $110
  • Culinary/Pastry Arts: June 25-28, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Center Campus, Fee $110
  • Robotics: June 25-29, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., South Campus, Fee $125
  • Biotechnology: July 9-12, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Center Campus, Fee $90
  • Start-up Macomb – Interactive Entrepreneurship Boot Camp: July 23-26, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.,  Center Campus, Fee $110
  • Earn As You Learn – Experience Apprenticeship: Aug. 6-9, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., South Campus, Fee $45

Students who attend the law enforcement academy are eligible for college credit for their work. The Macomb Community College Foundation is sponsoring this academy so that it is free of charge to engage young people in the possibilities of public service careers. Financial aid from the Macomb Intermediate School District helps keep the other academies’ fees reasonable.
