Photographic Arts Certificate Program

A Continuing Education Program

To me photography must suggest, not insist or explain.
- Brassaï, Photographer known for his dramatic photographs of Paris at night

What are the Photographic Arts?

Derived from the Greek for “drawing with light,” Photography, as pastime or profession, uniquely preserves one short moment in time as nothing else can.  Although it has advanced considerably since the first image was captured on a pewter plate nearly 200 years ago, Photography still relies on light and composition to communicate a Photographer’s vision.  Similarly, while Photoshop or other software can correct many flaws, the quality of a photograph still has everything to do with the skill of the individual who has taken it.

The Photographic Arts Certificate Program at Macomb

In Macomb’s Photographic Arts Certificate Program, you will learn how to get the most out of your digital camera by fully understanding all of its menus and controls.  You will learn how to compose shots, professional techniques for portraiture and black and white photography, and how to download and edit photographs using Photoshop.  You will explore composition techniques for cityscapes and landscapes, the effects of lighting on composition and what makes some photographers consistently better than others. The Photographic Arts courses may be taken individually or as part of the certificate program.

What is a Continuing Education Program?

Continuing Education programs are open enrollment (registration link here), which means you do not have to fill out an application to Macomb Community College.
