Are Online Classes Right for Me?

One of the first questions to ask when considering online courses is "Are they right for me?"

Online courses provide the same learning activities as on campus courses. You engage in discussions, write and submit papers, have specific assignment due dates, participate in team projects and more in an online course, just as you do in an onground course.

The major differences between online and on campus courses, however, are...

  1. The length. The majority of online courses at Macomb are eight weeks long. This means you are responsible for completing sixteen weeks of work in half the time.

  2. The delivery. Online courses are web-based. This means computer skills are essential and additional online reading and writing is to be expected.

Advantages of Online Courses

  1. Online courses are convenient.
Online classrooms are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You access announcements, assignments, quizzes and discussion forums any time you want. You create your schedule for completing the requirements and meeting specific due dates.

  2. Online courses offer flexibility.
Online courses provide flexibility for people with changing work schedules, who make frequent business trips, have young children, are caring for others, whose own health prevents them from making it to campus on a regular basis or adverse weather days. You can work your educational goals around your other life requirements!

  3. Online courses offer a variety of instructional methods.
Rather than relying mostly on lecture, online classes are host to a wealth of learning activities and multimedia including videos, audio, documents, discussion forums, internet resources, and much more
