Court Reporting Certificate Program

A Continuing Education Program

I find endless challenge in the complexities of the law. - Sonia Sotomayor, U.S. Supreme Court Justice

Why Court Reporting?

Court Reporting involves the transcribing of spoken words into a written document, creating the official transcript for court hearings, depositions and other legal proceedings.  The skills of a Court Reporter are essential to the operation of the legal system and are in high demand across the country.  Although some Court Reporters use voice writing equipment to record legal proceedings, shorthand and a stenotype machine is still the preferred method.  Court Reporters are employed by court systems, court reporting companies or may work on a freelance basis. They may also find work captioning spoken words for the deaf or hard-of-hearing for television or public events.

The Court Reporting Certificate Program at Macomb

Macomb’s Court Reporting Certificate Program is the only one in Michigan certified by the National Court Reporters Association.  You will be introduced to machine shorthand, the court reporter’s role in litigation support, broadcast captioning and computer-aided transcription.  You will learn about conflict-free writing and how to take legal, medical and technical dictation.  Throughout the program, you will work on building up your speed on the stenotype, until it reaches upwards of 200 words per minute with high accuracy.

What is a Continuing Education Program?

Continuing Education programs are open enrollment, which means you do not have to fill out an application to Macomb Community College. Continuing Education programs are not eligible for financial aid or for academic credit toward an associate degree or related certificate.
