TA Student Responsibilities

The Office of Veteran & Military Services is here to help you understand and utilize your military educational benefit, TA. Using TA funds allows you to save your GI Bill days/entitlement for transfer or future tuition costs.

TA programs are administered by the Sponsored Billing Veteran & Military Services office. Full branch specific details can be found on the web pages below or at the Veteran & Military Services office.  If receiving other tuition and fees specific benefits such as GI Bill or financial aid awards, the TA plan or other resource may be reduced.

Each military branch has varying requirements. The below list helps you understand those requirements. These plans are administered by the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. Understanding and abiding by the rules outlined in each TA plan is very important.

  • Fees, books and supplies are NOT covered. This is a tuition-only program.
  • Some plans require approval prior to your registration or the start date of your semester.
  • TA will not pay for courses you stop attending or never attend. If you do not plan to attend, be sure to drop during the 100% refund period.
    • See the Unearned Military Tuition Assistance (TA) Funds Policy section below for billing/payment details on courses you drop, withdrawal from or stop attending.
  • You must upload/submit an approved list of your required courses (signed program plan) to gain TA authorization from your branch.
  • Your voucher must be received by the College before your tuition is due or you could be dropped for non-payment.
  • If you change classes or degree programs, a new voucher is required for your branch to pay your bill.
  • Changes to grades can mean changes to the billing of the course.

Unearned Military Tuition Assistance (TA) Funds Policy

In accordance with Department of Defense (DOD) policy, Macomb Community College is required to return unearned TA funds on a proportional basis through the 60 percent completion point of the course for which the funds were provided. TA funds are earned proportionally during a course, with unearned funds returned based upon when a student stops attending the course. Instances of active duty service members withdrawing due to military service obligations will be accommodated to mitigate student loss.

  • Courses Dropped during the 100% refund period: 0% tuition billed to TA
  • Courses graded as NS (No Show): 0% tuition billed to TA;100% tuition billed to student
  • Course completion 1-29%: 40% tuition billed to TA; 60% tuition billed to student
  • Course completion 30-59%: 70% tuition billed to TA; 30% tuition billed to student
  • Course completion 60-100%: 100% tuition billed to TA
