MCOLES

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) has chosen the Macomb Criminal Justice Training Center to be a provider for Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) Certification and the Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE) Program

There are two legal avenues for retired Michigan law enforcement officers to take in order to legally carry firearms. The first is the Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). The second is through certification under LEOSA, which may be gained through MCOLES or from the agency that the officer retired from, provided that the agency is willing to participate. Note: MCOLES has no oversight of the retirees' former agency.

LEOSA:  If you are interested in obtaining LEOSA certification through MCOLES, you must first apply online on the MCOLES website, and click on Michigan Retired Law Enforcement Officers’ Firearms Carry Act. After you have completed the application process and receive your approval from MCOLES, contact the Macomb Criminal Justice Training Center to complete the registration/ assessment requirements at  586.498.4050 or cjtc@macomb.edu.

RPTE:  This program, offered October-March, is for individuals with previous law enforcement training and/or experience seeking eligibility for Michigan Law Enforcement Licensure through the RPTE program.  A waiver of mandatory basic police training may be granted to former police officers or to a Michigan pre-service candidate who is seeking additional years of eligibility. Out-of-state candidate applications for the RPTE program will not be accepted unless the candidate has completed at least one year of full-time, fully empowered, paid police service following his/her police training.

Once you have completed the MCOLES application process and requirements, contact the Macomb Criminal Justice Training Center to complete additional registration information at 586-498-4050, or  cjtc@macomb.edu.
