A tuition-free program at Macomb gives students the chance to explore skilled trades careers, earn college credit and build connections with employers in just one semester.

The MAP+ (Macomb Accelerated Pathways Plus) Industrial Readiness Program is a training opportunity designed to introduce students to careers in the skilled trades.

“Students get the opportunity to try hands-on courses and gain a better understanding of what a skilled trades career is really about,” said Carol Hensler, MAP+ program coordinator.

Explore careers in skilled trades

Specifically, the program offers career pathways in manufacturing and construction, fields that lead to occupations such as:

  • Electricians
  • Industrial maintenance technicians
  • CNC machinists
  • Robotics technicians
  • HVAC technicians
  • Construction managers and more

Many skilled trades professions enjoy competitive wages, with experienced workers and supervisors often earning salaries ranging from $70,000 to more than $100,000 annually.

MAP+ program participants earn 13 college credits through five courses selected with input from local employers. No previous experience is required. Students must attend in-person classes and have the willingness to learn hands-on skills.

The program is funded through a grant, meaning students pay no tuition and are not required to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Textbooks are also provided.

Build workplace skills

In addition to technical training, students participate in a series of career-readiness seminars led by Macomb’s Career Services department. Topics include:

  • Time management
  • Motivation and anti-procrastination
  • Critical thinking
  • Essential job skills
  • Career research
  • Resume development, interview preparation and job search skills

For those uncertain about their future career plans, MAP+ offers a low-risk opportunity to explore high-demand occupations in a short period of time.

“There are jobs available and upward career mobility,” Hensler said.

How to apply

Interested individuals must submit a completed application along with a high school transcript, SAT scores, or WorkKeys scores. Applicants who do not have these documents may complete a WorkKeys assessment at no cost.
