  • The Business, Information Technology and Culinary Spotlight event will take place Oct. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Center Campus.
  • Students in these programs can travel abroad, work in a newly renovated restaurant and compete in esports gaming events.
For many students, choosing a college program is more than just selecting classes. It’s about finding opportunities to build skills, make connections and gain real-world experience.

At Macomb, students have opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Study abroad experiences, special events and even a state-of-the-art restaurant provides hands-on learning that complements their coursework.

Visitors will have the chance to learn more about Macomb’s Business, Information Technology and Culinary programs during an Oct. 21 open house from 6 to 8 p.m. at Center Campus in Clinton Township.

During the event, participants will meet faculty, tour facilities, learn about degree and certificate options and discover the many ways students connect classroom learning to real-world experiences.

Taking education abroad

Macomb offers study abroad opportunities to its students in several programs, including its Business and Culinary programs.

“Travel-based learning offers students the chance to gain real-world experience, broaden their cultural perspectives and apply their classroom knowledge in diverse settings,” said Michael Balsamo, dean, Business and Information Technology.

Macomb’s business department will sponsor an upcoming trip to Ireland where students will have the chance to earn credit while exploring Irish culture, entrepreneurship and business practices.

Culinary students can also experience learning through travel by experiencing a culinary journey through France. The trip will explore the country’s food traditions, regional ingredients and culinary history.

In the past, students in these programs visited Japan, Germany, the Czech Republic and several other destinations.

Serving up a real-world experience

For culinary students, hands-on learning is an essential part of the educational experience.

Macomb’s student-operated restaurant, Monarque, gives Culinary, Pastry Arts and Hospitality Management students the chance to work in a professional dining environment while serving the community.

The recently renovated restaurant, located on Macomb’s Center Campus, features a dining area, open-concept kitchen, a beverage service and training bar, and formal entrance.

Students gain experience in food preparation, service, hospitality and restaurant operations while providing guests with unique dining experiences.

The educational side of esports

Learning in a competitive gaming environment seems like a stretch, but at Macomb, students have the chance to put their teamwork, communication, strategic-thinking and problem-solving skills into practice during the annual Esports Gaming event.

Past tournaments featured Fortnite and Super Smash Bros., bringing players together for an evening of competition and demonstrating how esports provides hands-on opportunities to build collaboration and leadership skills while connecting with the campus community.
