Macomb Community College’s lifelong learning program’s name change emphasizes focus on the interests of community members

Macomb Community College’s Society for Active Retirees (SOAR) program has been reimagined to better align with the interests of community residents and is being renamed MORE, the Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment. MORE is a lifelong learning initiative that welcomes anyone with a passion for learning and personal development. The noncredit classes offered through MORE will cover a variety of subjects presented by Macomb and guest faculty.

“The move to MORE signals our commitment to offer classes that are in line with the feedback we’ve received from our SOAR Macomb members,” said William Wood, director, Cultural Affairs and Community Engagement. “While many of our upcoming classes will be new, we also will be retaining some topics that have been perennial favorites. Whatever you’re looking to learn about, MORE has something to peak your interest.”

A new feature that MORE will offer are roundtables in which members will have the opportunity to discuss topics of interest from previous sessions. This allows further exploration of topics of mutual interest, with MORE members sharing their perspectives on what they have learned while recapturing some of the personal socialization that can be lost in a virtual format. The roundtables will be scheduled throughout the program.

The first semester of MORE will begin in early April and run through May. For a single registration fee of $75, members can participate is as many classes as they choose from approximately the 30 courses expected to be offered. Topics will include American art, nutrition, cooking demonstrations, cybersecurity and grant writing. The classes will be presented via Zoom and last approximately two hours, with the last half-hour reserved for a question and answer period. Class schedules will be available in early March online at
