Macomb Community College’s Center for Advanced Automotive Technology (CAAT) received a 2019 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, a higher education diversity and inclusion publication. The award honors institutions that encourage those from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). CAAT and 49 other institutions that are receiving this award are featured in the September 2019 issue of the magazine.

“CAAT is dedicated to making sure that our region’s automotive industry has the education, training and talent to support its continued leadership in the global marketplace,” said Don Hutchison, dean, Engineering and Advanced Technology, Macomb Community College. “Exposing young people from all walks of life to the opportunities in STEM careers is key to building a diverse, future workforce that continues to spur innovation.”

CAAT reaches out to a diverse group of students in a variety of ways, including conducting hands-on STEM and career exploration labs in middle school classrooms, offering summer STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) camps for middle school students and partnering with organizations such as the Girl Scouts for their Engineering Days activities.  Annually, CAAT sponsors Macomb Community College’s Auto STEAM Days, which introduces and engages approximately 3,000 middle and high school students from the metro Detroit region to in-demand career options in manufacturing and technology.

INSIGHT into Diversity magazine evaluated programs based on the organization’s efforts to encourage and motivate young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and initiatives.

Center for Advanced Automotive Technology

Funded by the National Science Foundation, Macomb’s CAAT is an advanced technological education center that partners with industry, education, government and professional organizations to identify opportunities for the creation and adaptation of curricula in advanced automotive technology programs, helping students prepare for careers in new and developing technologies.
