Four other Macomb students also place in national competition showcasing the best in skilled and technical education

Recent Macomb Community College graduate Strathearn Wood, 26, of Sterling Heights, took home the gold medal in T-shirt design at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Wood also won the top honor in the same category at the Michigan competition in May, advancing him to the national contest. Wood completed an associate degree in design and layout at Macomb in May 2019.

Wood’s circular design captures all that is Michigan in a simple inclusive design.

“I really wanted to show as many different aspects of Michigan life and Michigan industry without it being too busy or too cluttered or favoring one avenue of the state,” said Wood. “I’ve always liked graphic Ts and I like doing T-shirt design. That is what got me into the program.”

SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving middle school, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. The SkillsUSA Championships are competitive events showcasing the work of career and technical education students across the country. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels, with only gold medalists progressing to the national competition. This year, there were 6,400 registered entrants in the national competition competing in 103 categories.

Other Macomb Community College students who placed in the national competition were:

  • Haley Deming, 21, of Bruce Township, - Job Skill Demonstration A – Silver medal
  • Katherine Highland, 22, of Chesterfield – Pin Design – Bronze medal
  • Stavros Margarites, 30, of Sterling Heights – Photography - Bronze medal
  • Loretta Fisher, 35, of Chesterfield – Job Skill Demonstration Open – 4th place
