More than 800 associate degrees to be awarded

Macomb Community College is celebrating the accomplishments of its Fall 2017 graduates to whom more than 800 associate degrees are being awarded.  The college’s 98th commencement ceremony will take place on Friday, Dec. 15, 7 p.m., at the Macomb Center for Performing Arts on Macomb’s Center Campus in Clinton Township.

The commencement speaker and recipient of the Most Distinguished Graduate award is Robert Torres, of Chesterfield Township, who earned an associate of arts degree following summer term and is now pursuing a degree in computer science at Wayne State University. He hopes to eventually earn a master’s degree in artificial intelligence to help with space exploration.

Torres, 33, is a Marine Corp veteran. Married and a father of two, he said transitioning into civilian life was difficult. He took advantage of the assistance offered through Macomb’s Office of Veteran & Military Services.

“Macomb’s veteran’s office was very helpful in providing me access to multiple organizations to help adjust to civilian life,” Torres said. “And Macomb instructors were phenomenal in helping me believe in my potential. I don’t think I would have been as successful at any other college.”
