AT&T was joined by state Sen. Tory Rocca (R-Sterling Heights) to acknowledge the company’s $10,000 donation to Macomb Community College, which help support the school’s summer 2016 career academies. Macomb’s Career Academies offer area high-school students a chance to explore potential careers through hands-on learning experiences guided by professionals in those fields.

“AT&T is excited to partner with Macomb Community College and help in its effort to strengthen and further develop Michigan’s workforce.  They are doing impressive work engaging tomorrow’s workforce leaders in a meaningful way,” said Jim Murray, president of AT&T Michigan.

This year, 100 students ages 14 and up participated in seven career academies that Macomb offered: Law Enforcement, Fire and EMT, Culinary/Pastry Arts, Biotechnology, Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Veterinary Technician and I.T. Gaming.

Thanks to the AT&T grant, the college is able to maintain a very affordable fee for the summer academies. In addition, the college was able to offer the Hybrid Electric Vehicle Career Academy at no charge due to the AT&T grant and support from the college’s National Science Foundation-funded Center for Advanced Automotive Technology.

“The Career Academies program is a fantastic innovation benefiting not only our local students but the state as a whole,” said state Sen. Tory Rocca. “The challenge of recognizing and developing talent is always something Michigan is working to address, and programs like Career Academies make that task that much easier.”

James Jacobs, president of Macomb Community College, said AT&T’s gift helped make a difference to students at a crucial stage of their lives. “The career academies help students experience the realities of a career through hands-on activities,” Jacobs said. “Through its donation, AT&T is helping to provide affordable educational opportunities that will potentially impact these students’ future endeavors.”
