Macomb Community College offering a number of activities commemorating Black History Month beginning Feb. 3

– Wednesday, January 21, 2015 12:00AM

Macomb Community College is commemorating Black History Month with several free programs that highlight the cultural and historical contributions of African-Americans.

On Feb. 3, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., the Rev. Robert Jones, Sr., will present “American History through Music,” showcasing the relationship between America’s folk music and its historic and social changes. Jones is an accomplished blues educator and performer, as well as former WDET radio show host, who has toured across North America and Europe.  His program will begin with a look at the early spirituals of the 1840s and progress through the songs of the Underground Railroad, Industrial Revolution, early blues and its offshoots – country, jazz, bluegrass, gospel, R&B – concluding with rap and hip-hop. The presentation will be held in the library on Macomb’s Center Campus, Hall and Garfield roads in Clinton Township.

On Feb. 10, 9:30 – 11 a.m., a book discussion will be held about The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, author of The Secret Lives of Bees. Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, the book goes beyond the record to flesh out the lives of Sarah and her sister,  who rebelled against their family, society and their religion as they spoke in favor of liberty and equality for African-American slaves and women. The discussion will be held in the library on Macomb’s Center Campus in Clinton Township.

On Feb. 17, noon – 3 p.m., a viewing of the movie Ali, which depicts the life of famous boxing legend Muhammad Ali, will be held in the library on Macomb’s South Campus, 12 Mile and Hayes roads in Warren.

On Feb. 24, noon – 2:30 p.m., a viewing of the movie, Red Tails, which depicts real-life adventures of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American combat unit to serve in World War II, will be in the library on the college’s Center Campus in Clinton Township.

While the events are free, registration is required by calling Enrollment Services at 586.445.7999. You’ll need the registration number for each event: American History through Music – 31422; The Invention of Wings – 31423; Ali – 31427; and Red Tails – 31429.
