Annual Veterans Stand Down at Macomb Community College on Sept. 26 offers numerous resources under one roof

Macomb Community College is partnering with the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (UDM Law) Project SALUTE and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to host the annual Veterans Stand Down Macomb on Friday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Macomb’s Sports & Expo Center (P Building) on South Campus in Warren.

The free event will offer a broad range of resources and services for veterans, their survivors and their families from the VA and community-based organizations. They include: 

  • College and university admission counselors
  • Housing referrals
  • Legal and employment services
  • Medical and mental health information, provided by the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center
  • Representatives of the Michigan Secretary of State’s office and Social Security Administration

James Jacobs, president of Macomb Community College, will give welcoming remarks. Other speakers will be Pamela Wilkins, associate dean of academic affairs, UDM Law; Tyrone Chatman, executive director of the Michigan Veterans Foundation; and Mark Switalski, chief judge of the Macomb County Veterans Treatment Court.

“Serving the veteran community is important to Macomb Community College,” said Geary Maiuri, Macomb’s dean of student and community services. “Our annual Stand Down was established to put a variety of services and resources under one roof to make them as accessible as possible to the area’s veterans, their families and their survivors.”

Named by G.I. Jobs magazine as one of its Military Friendly Schools, Macomb provides veterans, reservists and their dependents assistance and support through various initiatives. Those include counseling and advising support, a student veteran organization, scholarships and links to local, regional, state and federal veterans’ information. Macomb also hosts annual Veterans Day ceremonies at its South and Center campuses.
