First State Bank (FSB), founded in Eastpointe and Macomb County, reaffirmed its commitment to the community with the announcement of a $10,000 scholarship program for East Detroit High School graduates. The First State Bank Scholarship Fund was first awarded in 2013 in honor of the bank’s longstanding association with the city and residents of Eastpointe.

The fund, donated to Macomb Community College Foundation, will provide ten (10) incoming students with scholarships of $1,000 each for the upcoming 2014 – 2015 academic year at Macomb Community College. The awards cover tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses. Students must be an East Detroit High School graduate (from any year), maintain a 2.5 grade point average and enrolled in a minimum of six (6) college credit hours.  To apply visit this link. The announcement, made during a check presentation at the annual Cruisin’ Gratiot car show, comes just weeks after a separate $1,000 scholarship gift was awarded. The annual scholarship – which dates back to the mid-1980s – was given in May to a 2014 East Detroit High School graduating senior.

“For nearly a century, First State Bank has been a solid and secure community bank headquartered in and serving Macomb County. We only thrive when our customers and communities do the same, so taking care of our customers and looking out for the best interest of our community is inherent in the way we conduct business.” said Eugene Lovell, president and CEO, First State Bank. “By providing scholarships for graduates of East Detroit High School we are investing in the educational opportunities to Eastpointe residents that can result in meaningful careers.”

The establishment of the scholarship fund not only aligns with FSB’s mission to help families and businesses reach their goals, but also parallels the ideals of Macomb Community College.

“Helping to provide educational opportunities for local residents is one of the most valuable things a business can do for the community it serves,” said James Jacobs, president of Macomb Community College. “With this scholarship program, First State Bank is making an investment in the competitiveness of Macomb County and its workforce.”

First State Bank shares a long heritage with the city of Eastpointe, when in 1917, it opened its first branch in what was then known as the village of Halfway. With branches located within the city and continued support for multiple events, FSB still maintains a strong connection with Eastpointe.
