Laboratory Assistant Program

A Continuing Education Program

An estimated 80 percent of physicians' decisions are based on laboratory test results. - American Society of Clinical Pathology

What is a Laboratory Assistant?

A Laboratory Assistant is skilled in both phlebotomy, drawing blood from patients for testing, and in assisting medical laboratory technicians in the preparation of blood and other specimens for testing in clinical laboratories.  Laboratory Assistants work in hospitals, out-patient clinics and specimen processing centers.

Macomb’s Laboratory Assistant Program

Macomb’s Laboratory Assistant Program is a Continuing Education Program that prepares you for immediate employment as well as for the American Medical Technologists (AMT) Exam.  In the program, you will learn how to draw blood from patients and assist in the distribution of blood and other specimens to the appropriate laboratory for testing: blood bank, chemistry, hematology or microbiology. You will be introduced to laboratory safety procedures and will complete an 80-hour unpaid internship in a clinical laboratory.

What is a Continuing Education Program?

Continuing Education programs are open enrollment, which means you do not have to fill out an application to Macomb Community College.  Continuing Education programs are not eligible for financial aid or for academic credit toward an associate degree or related certificate.
