GM launches Dealer Technician Scholarship program, offering 12 scholarships at Macomb Community College

– Thursday, June 13, 2019 12:00AM

Through a new program launched by General Motors Co., 12 Dealer Technician Scholarships will be offered at Macomb Community College, beginning with the fall 2019 semester. The scholarships will cover full tuition and fees while students earn an associate degree in automotive technology and pathway to jobs at GM dealerships.

In addition to coursework at Macomb, students will participate in paid co-op opportunities, with hands-on learning experiences led by experienced technicians at local Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealerships. Students will be exposed to many of GM’s industry-leading technologies including battery-electric vehicles, semi-autonomous driver assistance systems and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

“We’re tearing down the barriers that stand in the way of people pursuing these good-paying, high-tech jobs,” said Terry Rhadigan, executive director, GM Corporate Giving. “After two years, we want people to hit the ground running, so we will help them get a quality education, technical training and hands-on experience without the burden of student loans.”

The deadline for submission of completed scholarship applications is 5 p.m., July 26, 2019. Students awarded the scholarships must be enrolled full-time, maintain a grade point average of 2.5 and complete co-op rotations at local GM dealerships or ACDelco Professional Service Centers. “We’re excited to partner with GM to create greater opportunities for our students to connect to good careers and the growing possibilities in automotive technology,” said Don Hutchinson, dean, Engineering and Advanced Technology, Macomb Community College.

Macomb is one of the seven community colleges in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania with which GM is partnering, providing a total of 80 GM Dealer Technician Scholarships.
