Macomb Community College Board of Trustees sets 2019-2020 tuition rates

– Thursday, April 18, 2019 12:00AM

College’s tuition will rise 2%, following a year of no increases

At its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday evening, April 17, the Macomb Community College Board of Trustees authorized rates for the upcoming academic year, fall 2019 through spring/summer 2020.  Tuition for residents will increase 2%, going from the $100 per credit hour rate of the past two years to $102 a credit hour. For a student attending the college full time – taking 12 credits – this will result in an increase of $24 for the semester.

Macomb’s tuition rate remains well below average among the state’s 28 community colleges. The college has the fourth lowest cost of attendance in the state, which factors in both tuition and fees. Since 2004, Macomb has implemented budget reductions totaling $20.5 million, which doesn’t reflect additional savings from four years of frozen wages for college employees.

“We continue to deliver a fiscally responsible budget while preserving affordability for our students,” said Macomb President James O. Sawyer IV, Ed.D.  “Residents rely on us to maintain and invest in relevant programs that position our students for sustainable wage careers in a constantly evolving economy, while positioning our community for long-term economic vitality.”

Macomb’s revenue is comprised of three primary sources:  tuition (40%), local property taxes (29%) and state appropriations (26%).  Property tax revenue for the upcoming year is expected to be $5.5 million less than 2007-08. While the governor’s budget proposal includes a 3% increase in appropriations for community colleges, there is a long legislative process ahead before an actual appropriations level is approved.  Currently, the college’s level of appropriations from the state is $257,000 less than that of 2002.

“I am privileged to serve on Macomb Community College’s board, representing the interests of our county’s residents,” said Katherine Lorenzo, chair, Macomb Community College Board of Trustees. “I and my colleagues on the board remain sensitive to the financial pressures our students face. The college continues to effectively manage the delicate balancing act of preserving affordability, maintaining and investing in relevant programs, and protecting fiscal integrity and sustainability.”
