Three graduates to reflect on their educational journey during ceremony

Macomb Community College is celebrating its 100th commencement on Friday, Dec. 14, 7 p.m., at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts on Macomb’s Center Campus in Clinton Township. The college will be awarding nearly 800 associate degrees to those completing their degree requirements at the end of the winter 2018 semester.

Three Macomb graduates will speak at commencement, sharing their educational journey.

Marianne Pupka, 58, of Shelby Township, originally came to Macomb to strengthen her website design skills by earning her degree in interactive web media.  She discovered, though, that her educational process became therapeutic as it helped her overcome the loss of a loved one.

Ryan Brown, 28, of Detroit, acknowledges that life’s challenges made attending school difficult. He enrolled and left school several times before realizing that an associate degree in general business was within reach.  He plans to pursue certification as a personal trainer and eventually start a food truck business.

Jennifer Lafon, 22, of Sterling Heights, says her studies at Macomb have broadened her view on the world and have given her a better perspective on life. She is receiving her associate degree in general studies and plans to transfer to Wayne State University to study social work.
