Popular demand prompts addition of summer program

Due to demand, Macomb Community College is offering its first-ever summer semester July 16 – July 27 of the popular SOAR Macomb program. SOAR Macomb, which offers short, noncredit courses offering social and cultural enrichment and personal growth, will present 10 summer classes on topics ranging from Brazilian music and yoga for the mind to the fundamentals of K-9 search and rescue. Since its introduction in fall 2014, the program has attracted nearly 2,000 learners, with many of the classes filled to capacity.

“Our SOAR Macomb members have told us that the wait between semesters is too long, so we’ve introduced a summer session,” said William Wood, director of cultural affairs and community engagement for Macomb Community College. “Our active learners have responded so enthusiastically to SOAR Macomb’s programming that we not only wanted to offer an expanded program but also try some new things.”

One new thing for the summer semester is an increase in off-site sessions, including a trip to the Detroit Institute of the Arts and classes at Stahls Automotive Foundation in Chesterfield and Crocker House Museum in Mount Clemens. The two-hour classes that will be held onsite this summer at the Macomb University Center on the college’s Center Campus include an inside look at Eastern Market, an overview of the U.S. Army impact on Macomb County and a discussion covering different perspectives on Shakespeare’s Henry V.

Brazilian samba, bossa nova, choro and baiso will be performed by the local group Brazil and Beyond in the Brazilian Music Styles, Sounds and Rhythms session, in which participants will learn about the history, roots and exotic instruments of Brazilian musical styles.

During Fundamentals of K-9 Search and Rescue, Wolverine State Search and Recovery members will demonstrate with certified dogs how the animals are trained and certified for search and rescue.

Participants can choose three classes for a registration fee of $25.  Individual classes are also available for a $10 fee. Courses are taught by experts in their respective fields.

Online registration for the summer SOAR Macomb semester begins Monday, June 4, 10 a.m. at Registration will also be accepted via U.S. Mail and processed on a first-come, first-served basis beginning June 4.
