Macomb Community College recognized as veteran-friendly

– Monday, November 6, 2017 12:00AM

Macomb Community College has been recognized by both the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) and Victory Media as having programs and services committed to support the needs of veteran students and their dependents.

MVAA named Macomb to their gold level as a Veteran-Friendly School. The Veteran-Friendly School program awards institutions of higher learning with gold-, silver-, and bronze-level status, based on their dedication to student veterans and dependents utilizing their G.I. Bill and other educational benefits.  Seventy institutions were recognized in this year’s program, with Macomb one of 41 to achieve the gold level. This is the third year of the program and the third consecutive year Macomb has achieved gold-level status.

MVAA is housed within the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. It serves as the central coordinating point for Michigan veterans, connecting those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and their families, to services and benefits throughout the state.

The gold, silver and bronze rankings awarded by MVAA are based on a set of seven criteria including:

  • Established process for identification of current student veterans
  • Active student-operated veterans association
  • Veteran-specific career services, resources, advising and/or outcome monitoring
  • On-campus veterans’ coordinator or designated point of contact
  • System to evaluate and award credit based on prior military training and experience
  • Monitoring and evaluation of student veteran academic retention, transfer and graduation rates
  • Veteran-specific website

Macomb was only one of 29 schools to meet all seven criteria. The complete listing is available here.

Macomb has also been recognized by Victory Media as a 2018 Military Friendly School. Victory Media, a veteran-owned organization that publishes G.I. Jobs, STEM Jobs and Military Spouse magazines, has compiled and published the Military Friendly Schools listing since 2009. Final ratings were determined through a combination of survey scores and the assessment of the institution’s student retention, graduation, job placement and loan repayment statistics. Macomb has been recognized since the list was initiated in 2009.

Macomb’s Office of Veteran & Military Affairs is dedicated to offering a network of services and resources for veterans, service members and their family members. Services include counselors dedicated to the specific needs of veterans, scholarships, assistance applying for educational resources, veteran-related community events and a student veteran organization.
