Donation will cover full tuition, books and fees for one student for two years from each of the 30 public high schools in Macomb County

The Kathy and Jerry Wood Foundation has awarded $360,000 to the Macomb Community College Foundation to fund two-year scholarships to the college for one student from each of Macomb County’s 30 public high schools. The scholarships are designed to fund 100 percent of the estimated annual cost of tuition, fees and additional educational expenses, providing $3,000 per semester -- for a total value of up to $12,000.

“The Wood Scholarship Fund provides an incredible opportunity for motivated and deserving students that eliminates the ability to afford college as a barrier to attendance,” said James Jacobs, president, Macomb Community College.  “These generous scholarships are an investment in our community’s greatest asset -- young people who are determined to position themselves for a successful future.”

Each Macomb County high school will be responsible for soliciting and reviewing applications from their graduating seniors, choosing the winning candidate and notifying the Macomb Community College Foundation of their selection by May 1, 2017.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must:

  • Be a graduating senior from a public high school in Macomb County,
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 at the time of their high school graduation,
  • Provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach, employer, counselor or mentor,
  • Submit a 250-word (minimum) essay about their educational goals, financial need and how the scholarship will make a difference, and,
  • Show proof of acceptance at Macomb Community College.

Scholarship recipients must attend Macomb Community College full time (12 credit hours or more) and maintain a 2.5 grade point average.
