Life Application Ministries honored Jacobs for ‘making Warren a better place’

Macomb Community College President James Jacobs was this year’s recipient of the Kelly Colegio Community Servant Award, presented annually by Life Application Ministries Christian Church in Warren.  The award honors those deemed to have contributed to “preserving a quality of life for Warren’s residents, upholding moral values, and fighting for educational opportunities and expansion in the City of Warren.”

Jocelyn Howard, community relations coordinator for Life Application Ministries, said Jacobs received the award for being a “servant to the community” and “making Warren a better place to live, work and raise a family.”  She said the church was impressed with Macomb’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service program, which organizes volunteer opportunities for hundreds of Macomb students and staff in honor of the holiday. She also cited the college’s work retraining displaced workers and Macomb’s collaboration with Wayne State University and its recently opened Advanced Technology Education Center, located across from Macomb’s South Campus on 12 Mile Road in Warren.

“I accepted this award on behalf of the staff of Macomb Community College,” Jacobs said. “It recognizes the efforts of many talented people who work together to accomplish the mission of the college.  Everything that happens here is a team effort.”

Jacobs has more than 40 years’ experience at Macomb Community College and has served as president since 2008. He earned his Ph.D. from Princeton and currently serves on the Governor’s Talent Investment Board and a number of local boards including the Center for Automotive Research, Metropolitan Affairs Council and the Detroit Institute of Arts, of which he is vice chair.  He is widely known for the annual Macomb County Economic Forecast, which he will give for the 31st time in January 2015 for the coalition of county’s chambers of commerce.  Jacobs has presented at numerous Leadership Macomb sessions over the past several years on various topics including education, the economy and leadership.

The award from Life Application Ministries was renamed last year in honor of 2013 recipient Kelly Colegio, a member of the Warren City Council. Jacobs received the award on Dec. 7 at a ceremony held at Warren City Hall. Life Application Ministries is located at 31731 Schoenherr Road.
