Dec. 2 event for teens and parents at Macomb Community College offers close-up look at manufacturing and technology careers

– Friday, November 21, 2014 12:00AM

Special evening session complements the college’s annual Robotics, Engineering and Technology Days

Middle and high school students, along with their parents, will be able to explore the great potential of today’s manufacturing and technology careers at a free event on Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Macomb Community College’s Sports & Expo Center on South Campus in Warren.

Explore Careers in Manufacturing and Technology will feature perspectives from recent Macomb graduates working in these fields, as well as a panel discussion of local, leading employers. The panel will include Larry Drake III, CEO and president, KUKA Systems North America, a worldwide supplier of assembly systems and other related machinery for the automotive, aerospace, alternative energy and manufacturing industries, and Tom Ruczynski, senior vice president, Proper Group International, which offers rapid prototype development to the world’s most sophisticated injection molds — along with production injection molding and precision machining capabilities — for today’s transportation industry.

There will also be hands-on activities and demonstrations involving alternative fuel applications, renewable energy, robotics, mechatronics and automotive clay modeling, as well as opportunities to meet with representatives from local manufacturing and technology-related businesses who will discuss the nature of their business, the types of jobs available and what they look for in job candidates.

While the event is free, pre-registration is required by going online to www.macomb.edu/RETevening

The evening event complements this year’s Robotics, Engineering & Technology (RET) Days, which provide half-day explorations of careers in science, technology, engineering and math for middle and high school students, and feature hands-on activities and discussions with industry experts. More than 2,100 students from 48 schools in southeast Michigan will be attending RET Days on Dec 2 and 3.
