To Jan and Jim Kohler, Macomb Community College is a special place. “I grew up at Macomb,” said Jan, who began working here at the age of 19. “I made life-long friends, and worked all over the college, part-time and full-time.” Jan left Macomb to work for General Dynamics, returning the college in 2006 to work at the Foundation office.
When Jan retired in 2011, she and Jim wanted to contribute Macomb in a way that would not only support the many programs and opportunities offered through the college, but would also provide a lasting tribute to former College president Dr. Al Lorenzo. They worked with their estate planner to establish a “planned gift” in support of the Lorenzo Cultural Center. “The programs at the Lorenzo Cultural Center benefit people across the community, from children to seniors. Any program they present is a quality program, like the exhibits and school presentations,” Jan said.
The Legacy Society recognizes donors who have indicated a planned gift in a will, estate plan or life insurance policy. Legacy Society donors are acknowledged with their names on the Donor Wall, located in the lobby of the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. “To be recognized for this planned gift is very special to Jim and me,” Jan said. “We don’t need the attention, but it brings full circle that the College recognizes our commitment, not just our gift.”
