Macomb Community College Board of Trustees selects James O. Sawyer IV, ED.D to serve as the college’s next resident designate
Dr. Jim Sawyer currently serves as Provost and Senior Vice President at Macomb Community College. During his 14 years at Macomb, he has also served as the Dean of Engineering and Advanced Technology and Vice Provost for Career Programs.
As Provost, Jim has been leading Macomb’s cultural transformation from student access to student success. His work experience includes curriculum development, grant management, program reviews, technology and facility enhancements to improve learning, and partnership development. Jim has fostered a culture of inquiry and continuous improvement to improve student learning. He has used data informed decisions to create and revise several academic programs and policies to promote student success. Jim has also been the principle investigator on two successful National Science Foundation grants. Macomb’s commitment to students and progress on student success resulted in the college first being named an Achieving the Dream Leader College in 2013 and again in 2016.
Jim has 17 years of business experience in leadership positions in engineering, quality, and operations prior to joining Macomb Community College. His business experience enables him to provide a perspective that ensures Macomb’s academic and workforce programs are designed and delivered to meet employer needs. Jim is a Certified Quality Engineer with an educational background that includes a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Lawrence Technological University, Master of Science in Administration and Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Central Michigan University.
Jim has been a resident of Macomb County for over 40 years and currently serves on the boards of Leadership Macomb, St. John Providence Hospital, Macomb/St. Clair Workforce Development, Michigan Design Council, and the American Society of Body Engineers Foundation.
