Author Jerry Dennis will discuss his acclaimed book, The Living Great Lakes: Searching for the Heart of the Inland Seas, noon, Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Macomb Cultural Center, Clinton Township. The event is free and is part of Great Lakes, Great Stories: Michigan's Maritime Heritage, a three-month-long series of programs exploring the history, romance and legacy of the Great Lakes.
Dennis brings to life his personal experience as a crewmember on a six-week journey of the Great Lakes aboard a tall-masted schooner to illustrate the history, nature and science of the lakes. Exploring the five Great Lakes in all seasons and visiting remote shores and city waterfronts, Dennis incorporates the perspectives of biologists, fishermen, sailors and others that he met during his voyage to present a surprising look at how the 95,000 square miles of the Great Lakes has affected the lives of tens of millions of people.
The Macomb Cultural Center, Macomb County's place for discovery, explores the influences and experiences that shape our community's heritage, examining topics from a variety of perspectives and creating interactive opportunities for learning, celebration and entertainment. Located on Macomb Community College's Center Campus, Hall and Garfield roads in Clinton Township, the Macomb Cultural Center is adjacent to the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts.
