Five students have been recognized as being “some of the finest students at Macomb” Community College by Macomb’s faculty. Each of the five students was awarded $1,000 scholarships by the faculty organization.
The recipients of the awards are:
Joseph Romeo of Sterling Heights, sponsored by Zak Musallam, math faculty.
Milad Zuhair Asfar of Sterling Heights, sponsored by Deborah Swiderski, math faculty.
Bryan Clinton of Clinton Township, sponsored by Cheryl Sypniewski, business faculty.
Jesse D. Cutts of Shelby Township, sponsored by Brian Sauriol, media and communication arts faculty,
Elizabeth D. Donevski of Macomb Township, sponsored by Cynthia Brown El, communications faculty.
The scholarship awards are presented annually by the Macomb Community College Faculty Organization. To be eligible for consideration, students must display academic excellence and be nominated by a member of the faculty. The recipients must be full-time students who have completed 24 or more credit hours at Macomb.
Dawn Roberts, president of MCCFO and a communications instructor, said selecting the winners is an extremely difficult process.
“These students embody excellence in the academic arena,” she said.
Musallam said seeing a student he sponsored receive the scholarship is a joy that is hard to put into words.
“It is a special excitement as a teacher to be able to be able to recognize such an excellent student,” he said.
MCCFO has been awarding the scholarships for 32 years and have honored 151 students in that time.
The scholarships are funded by donations from faculty members and by family members of deceased faculty. Three of the scholarships are named in honor of deceased faculty: the Lloyd Raskin Award, the Andy Drotar Award and the Tschirhart Scholarship.
