Search for next Macomb Community College president begins

Current president honored by board of trustees for his dedicated service
Release Date:
December 6, 2007

A national search for the next president of Macomb Community College has begun. In early fall, Albert L. Lorenzo, the college's president since July 1979, announced his intention to retire by the conclusion of his current contract in September 2008.

Macomb Community College's Board of Trustees has engaged the services of the Association of Community College Trustees, a nonprofit educational organization of the governing boards of more than 1,200 community, technical and junior colleges in the United States, to assist in the search process. They have also appointed a 16-member presidential search committee consisting of representatives from the college's board, employees and students, as well as from the community. The search committee will review and evaluate applications for the presidency, recommending finalists for interview consideration by Macomb's board of trustees.

"This is a vitally important process and decision for both Macomb Community College and Macomb County," said Nancy Falcone Sullivan, chair of the college's board of trustees as well as the presidential search committee. "Access to meaningful and affordable higher educational opportunities has never been more critical to the future vitality of Macomb County and its residents. Both the college's board of trustees and the presidential search committee are focused on working to identify the right leader to ensure that Macomb College remains the responsive, indispensable community resource that Macomb County and it residents have been able to rely on for more than 50 years."

A series of meetings with the ACCT search consultant, David R. Pierce, and college staff, the presidential search committee and the college's board of trustees have resulted in identifying ideal characteristics that should characterize the college's next president. This as well as information about the application and nomination process is available at www.macomb.edu/presidentialsearch.

In recognition of President Lorenzo's nearly 30 years of dedicated leadership and his role in transforming Macomb into a nationally recognized academic institution, the college's board of trustees has acted to rename the newly opened Macomb Cultural Center. Located on the college's Center Campus in Clinton Township, the facility will now be known as the Albert L. Lorenzo Cultural Center. "My family and I are deeply appreciative of the board's decision," Lorenzo said.
