Macomb, Walsh Offer IT Career Exploration Session

Release Date:
January 19, 2010

With forecasts for job growth in the information technology sector still outpacing the national average, Macomb Community College and Walsh College will offer an Information Technology Career Exploration Night, Thursday, Feb. 11, at Macomb’s South Campus.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, national employment for computer network, systems, and database administrators is expected to grow by 30 percent between 2008 and 2018. Most jobs in the field require a bachelor’s degree and/or specialized industry certification. Macomb and Walsh have agreements that allow students to seamlessly transfer between the two colleges as they work toward associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a variety of information technology-related degrees. Students can also earn a variety of industry certifications at the colleges.

“Highly skilled people will always be in demand,” said Matt Roush, editor of the Great Lakes IT Report, who will serve as the keynote speaker at the Feb. 11 program. “Those attending the session will find out how to take the first steps to enter the IT field or, for those already working in the field, learn about educational options to help them advance.”

Other speakers at the information session will focus on starting an IT business, look at IT security issues and offer a forecast on the local IT job market.

Professors from Macomb and Walsh will be on hand to discuss the program options at their respective schools.

The information night program will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in K Building on Macomb’s South Campus, 12 Mile & Hayes roads, Warren. The program is free, though advance registration is required and may be made by visiting www.walshcollege.edu/macombitcareernight.
