WHO TAKES PLACEMENT TESTS?

New Students
All new students must participate in a one-session assessment that provides an evaluation of their current skills in English, reading and math. It is important to complete a Placement test at the earliest opportunity to avoid last minute scheduling problems and registration delays. After discovering more about themselves through the assessment process, students will attend an orientation and learn more about Macomb Community College.

Former Students
An assessment of writing and reading skills is also required of any returning student who enrolled at Macomb prior to Summer 1986 semester, have not yet successfully completed English or reading courses, and intend to do so. Students who enrolled in the Summer 1986 semester and thereafter and did not complete the assessment process, must do so before registering for any future semester.

Exceptions
In some cases, placement testing exemptions are available if a student has already successfully completed college level courses in reading, writing and math; completed a similar assessment process recognized by Macomb; has approved "guest" status; or if they are an academic scholarship recipient. Students may be exempt from placement testing and orientation for up to 16 credit hours for personal interest. However, students may not take classes in English, math or reading without completing the placement test and orientation.

To obtain an exemption from the assessment process, appropriate documentation (i.e. college transcripts, scholarship awards or guest application form), must be submitted to Registration & Enrollment in advance of registration.
