Tuesday, April 22
"American Visions" Documentary Series
4:30 to 6PM, in South Campus Library, room J-221

Hosted by Tom Salas, south campus, Campus Minister, "American Visions," is an eight-part series on American art written and narrated by Time magazine art critic Robert Hughes. It is American history told through art, not merely a history of art.
In this 3rd episode, "The Wilderness and the West", Hughes tackles the relationship between painting, national identity, and Manifest Destiny. He discusses the work of landscape painters such as Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, and the Luminists, who viewed the natural world as "the fingerprint of God's creation," and of those who recorded America's westward expansion--George Caleb Bingham, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Remington--and the accompanying shift in the perception of the American Indian, from noble savage to outright demon.
This event is free and open to the public. Call Tom Salas at 586-445-7378 for more information.
