REQUIREMENTS

The Occupational Therapy Assistant and General Education courses are reinforced by supervised clinical fieldwork experiences. Level I Fieldwork Placements are completed during semesters two and three of the curriculum. Level II Fieldwork Placements are scheduled for the fourth semester of the program, but must be completed within 18 months of the didactic course work.

Prior to beginning clinical fieldwork placements (OTAS-1450, OTAS-2450, OTAS-2580, OTAS-2590) students need to be aware of the following requirements:

  • Health Requirements
    • Complete history and physical exam by a Licensed Physician
    • Immunizations/Titers to determine immunity to communicable diseases
    • TB test or Chest X-ray

  • CPR Certification
    • Students need to have current proof of CPR certification. Healthcare Provider CPR is required certification. The student must maintain certification for the duration of the time they are completing fieldwork placements.

  • Health Insurance
    • The College requires that students have hospitalization insurance, as neither the hospital nor the College insures the student against accidents or illness, even if it occurs as a result of, or while working with, a patient.

  • Criminal Background Check/Drug Screening
    • Many of the clinical agencies that Macomb Community College contracts with require a criminal background check and drug screen for all OTA students at their facilities. Criminal background checks are conducted routinely for admission to the program. Clinical placements may be denied to students who have been convicted of a crime and will result in the inability to complete the program. Therefore, all students are required to undergo a criminal background check, and are required to submit the results of a drug screen to the secretary of the OTA program at the beginning of the program. Drug screening will be completed at the student's expense. Students who fail to complete the above will not be allowed to participate in clinical.

  • Transportation, Uniforms and Supplies and Health Insurance
    • Students are responsible for all transportation and parking fees to fieldwork sites, uniforms and supplies required by the placement. Proof of health insurance is required as neither the clinical sites nor the college insures the student against accidents or illness.

  • It is the student's responsibility to submit the documentation at the appropriate times.
