Supporting English as a Second Language (ESL) Students
Theresa Pruett-Said, Professor of EAPP, MCC
In this workshop, attendees will learn who these students are, and how all of us can help them succeed. We will explore linguistic, cultural, and academic challenges this group may encounter. Through the use of critical incidents we will discover how some multicultural students try to cope. In addition, attendees will become aware of language learning myths, and how second language acquisition works. Particular structures that ESL students often have difficulty with and how much students can do on their own to correct mistakes will be reviewed.
Cultural differences, especially background knowledge regarding American culture, can contribute as much to misunderstanding as language does. The facilitator will share common gaps in knowledge that ESL students have. Professor Pruett-Said encourages attendees to bring their own experiences in this regard to second language students.
Time for questions and discussion will be allotted. Theresa will explain the services that the EAPP offers at Macomb and how she can be contacted.
