Macomb Student Study Abroad Fund

The Macomb Student Study Abroad Fund is created to encourage Macomb Community College students to travel outside the USA in order to deepen global understanding and broaden socio-cultural perspectives, characteristics necessary for their future civic and career lives.

Criteria for Funding: 

Travel must be connected to an academic program, a Macomb study abroad program, or an MMII (Macomb Multicultural International Initiatives) approved activity

• Students must have completed 2 semesters at Macomb, or 15 credit hours, successfully
• Students must be 18 years of age
• Students may be asked by the selection committee to present or share their travel experiences with the college community.

At present, awards are limited to $500.00 per student, based on available funds.

You may also contribute to the Fund and help support Macomb students in broadening their horizons and gaining international experiences.  All donations are tax-deductible.  Checks may be made out to the Macomb Foundation.  Please write student study abroad in the memo section of the check to signify the proper fund and mail to the Macomb Foundation, 14500 E. 12 Mile Rd, Warren, Mi. 48088-3896. Study Abroad Program in Guadalajara, Mexico

 The Macomb Community College Spanish Department will conduct several summer Spanish courses in Guadalajara, Mexico. There will be three components. The first, Introduction and Orientation, will be held on the Macomb Community College Center Campus; the second component is the On-Site Instruction, which will take place at the Centro de Estudios para Extranjeros , a school affiliated with the Universidad de Guadalajara, in Guadalajara, Mexico's second largest city. The third and final component, Assessment, will take place on Center Campus. Macomb Community College Spanish Professor Maria Ramos will accompany the students to Guadalajara. Students who would like to audit any of the Spanish classes are also welcome.

Prior to registration, each applicant will need to schedule an interview with Professor Ramos. Upon approval by Professor Ramos, it will be necessary for students to register for the class through Enrollment. Program price deposit: 25% ($225) by January 31 – 25 % ($225) by February 28; 50 % ($500) and plane tickets by March 31. Registration deadline: April 30, 2012.

Study Abroad Program in CIOCIARIA, Italy

The Macomb Community College Italian Department will conduct several summer Italian courses in Castro Dei Volsci in the province of Frosinone, Italy.  The courses will be an intensive four week program with the first two weeks at Macomb Community College Center Campus and the last two weeks abroad in "Casa Gregorio", a 17th century recently remodeled house in Castro Dei Volsci.

Macomb Community College Italian Professor Angelo Aulensi will conduct the program and teach the class as well. Students who would like to audit any of the Italian classes are also welcome.

Prior to registration, each applicant will need to schedule an interview with Professor Angelo Aulensi.  Upon assessment and approval by Professor Aulensi it will be necessary for students to register for the class through Enrollment. Program price deposit:  1/3 ($550) by January 31; 1/3 ($550) by February 28; 1/3 ($550) and airline tickets by March 31. Registration deadline: April 27, 2012.

The first, Introduction and Orientation, will be held on the Macomb Community College South Campus; the second component is the On-Site Instruction, which will take place at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas, a school affiliated with the Universidad de Granada, Spain. The third and final component, Assessment, will take place on South Campus. Macomb Community College Spanish Professor Susanna Williams will accompany the students to Granada. Students who would like to audit any of the Spanish classes are also welcome.

Prior to registration, each applicant will need to schedule an interview with Professor S. Williams. Upon approval by Professor Williams, it will be necessary for students to register for the class through Enrollment. Program price deposit: 25% ($225) by January 31 – 25 % ($225) by February 28; 50 % ($450) and plane tickets by March 31. Registration deadline: April 27, 2012

Pompeii Food and Drink Project, Pompeii, Italy
Summer 2012

Fieldwork Dates for 2012:

• Week 1 – June 24th to June 30th
• Week 2 – July 1st to July 7th
• Week 3 – July 8th to July 14th

The Pompeii Food and Drink Project offer an unequaled opportunity to explore the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy, with a staff of historians, architects, classicists and archaeologists.

The research goal is to analyze the patterns of daily life by a non-invasive study of the structures that are associated with the production, storage, distribution, preparation, consumption and service of food and drink.  Volunteers measure, sketch, and photograph food and drink related archaeological features in kitchens, dining rooms, restaurants, stores, supply warehouses, vineyards, farms and anywhere else food is evident.

Pompeii is an endangered site and completing our research is urgent! The excavation site (called the scavi) is about 25 km from Naples and 3 hours by train from Rome.

Our accommodations, in the Villa dei Misteri Motel are within walking distance of the ancient city.  Rooms are air-conditioned, double occupancy, with a lovely pool and excellent dining.  The cost is $1,600.00 US per week, air fare not included.  Applications are available online and must be submitted by March 1, 2012 with a $500.00 deposit.

No special skills are required; we will teach you what you need to do! Bring your curiosity and a desire to contribute to significant scientific field research.

 EU Launches "Study in Europe" Web Site

The European Commission recently launched a Web site called "Study in Europe" to help increase the number of students from outside Europe who study in the European Union. The site is www.study-in-europe.org.

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

Gilman Awards

Over 1,200 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000. Undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at 2-year or 4-year colleges or universities are eligible to apply.

Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 50 Critical Need Language Supplements were offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2007-2008 academic year. There will be an increased number of Supplements this academic year.

Critical Need Languages include:

• Arabic (all dialects)
• Chinese (all dialects)
• Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek)
• Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki)
• Indic (Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi)
• Korean
• Russian
