MIRACLE OF LIFE & HEALTHY PET SURGICAL SUITE - September 2008
Each year the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association hosts the Miracle of Life Exhibit and the Healthy Pet Surgical Suite at the Michigan State Fair.
At the Miracle of Life Exhibit, the public is able to see the birth of lambs, calves, piglets, ducks, turkeys and many other different animals. As you can imagine, this exhibit is one of the most attended at the fair.
The Healthy Pet Surgical Suite is a public education project that presents narrated live spay/neuter surgeries, performed by licensed veterinary surgeons, to onlookers, while emphasizing the importance of pet health care, control of animal overpopulation, and highlighting the veterinary profession.
This year staff and students from Macomb’s Veterinary Technician program volunteered and helped out with both events. Along with MVMA members, veterinary students, and MSU CVM staff, we were available to help answer questions and educate the public on animals and animal health. It was an experience of a lifetime and a fun kick-off to the new school year.
DETROIT ZOO RUN WILD - September 2008
The Macomb Community College Vet Tech Program participated in the Bank of America Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo again this year. Every year in September thousands of people gather at the zoo for a chance to help raise some money. Participants are involved in events such as a 5k and 10k run as well as a walk within the zoo. This is a great chance to help raise money for the zoo. In 2007 more than $100,000 was raised to pay for equipment in the Ruth Ruby Glancy Animal Health Complex.
In addition to help raise funds for the zoo, Macomb Community College has a friendly competition going on with the other Vet Tech Programs in Michigan. Which ever school brings in the best scores goes home with the “Run Wild” trophy. We were the 2007 trophy winners and had hoped to bring it back to Macomb again this year. Unfortunately, we lost a hard fought battle to the Wayne Vet Tech Program. The staff and students had a great time and are already planning strategy to bring the trophy back to MCC next fall!
VETERINARY ASSISTANT CAREER ACADEMY - June & July 2008
Each summer the Veterinary Technician program here at Macomb holds a Veterinary Career Academy. This year we held two different Academies. The original Veterinary Career Academy which gives an overview of animal related careers with a focus on companion animals and a new one called the Exotic Career Academy which focused on exotic animal species. Both programs were designed for high school students who are interested in learning more about animal related careers. Both Academies were well attended.
The students had a lot of hands-on opportunity to work with dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, ferrets, hamsters, as well as a snake, iguana and bearded dragon. While in the programs, they also learned radiographic positioning, laboratory procedures, bandaging techniques, TPR and much more. All of the students had a great time and learned a lot about working with animals.
PEOPLE PETS & VETS - October 2008
Back by popular demand! Macomb Community College and the Veterinary Technician Program along with the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association are proud to co-sponsor this exciting one-day event.
This year People, Pets and Vets will take place on Saturday, October 25, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Macomb Community College’s Center Campus which is located at M59 and Garfield Rd. Admission is free!
With over 30 exhibits to see and touch this is a unique opportunity for the entire family to enjoy interactive, hands on experiences with a variety of animals. Veterinarians as well as veterinary technicians, pet industry experts and animal service groups will be on hand to share their expertise and answer questions. The emphasis at PPV is on learning proper care, respect and appreciation for all animals. There is even a special Teddy Bear Clinic where children can bring their “well loved” stuffed animals in need of surgery.
People, Pets and Vets is a wonderful experience for animal lovers of all ages as well as an excellent example of how Macomb Community College and the Veterinary Technician Program reach out to the community to showcase the veterinary profession.
RINGER’S 6TH BIRTHDAY! - November 2007
Our canine program mascot, “Ringer”, celebrated her 6th birthday this past year. The students and staff held what has now become, “Ringers” annual birthday party, last November. We had doggy cake and cake for her human guests as well. She received many, many gifts (the treats she shared with the other dogs in the program)! We all enjoyed the festivities (although “Ringer” hates when she has to wear a birthday hat.).
