PROGRAM INFORMATION

 

Graduates of Macomb's Legal Assistant program continue to claim vital positions in law offices, corporations, government agencies and offices, banks, title companies, courts, and insurance companies. Macomb's Legal Assistant program is approved by the American Bar Association.

The Legal Assistant program at Macomb will train you to:

  • conduct legal research, including computer-assisted research
  • interview clients and witnesses
  • prepare various legal documents
  • prepare legal forms necessary to organize and operate business

You will also learn:

  • the fundamentals of civil procedure and litigation
  • the ethical responsibilities of a legal assistant
  • the structure of federal and state court systems
  • basic real estate and business law
  • criminal law and procedure
  • bankruptcy law and procedure including debt collection
  • family law and procedure
  • administrative law and procedure
  • probate law and procedure

Affiliates/Degrees

Courses in the Legal Assistant Program, combined with courses in Arts and Sciences, lead to an Associate of Applied Science degree. This degree can transfer directly to a Bachelor or Arts degree in Legal Administration through the University of Detroit Mercy offered at Macomb's University Center.
